Fat is a feminist issue

Geen seksisme op het internet Een vrouw met een mening kan er maar beter goed uitzien, dat weten vrouwen op het publieke forum al langer. Ook niet te goed, want ook dat roept om commentaar. Gewoon neutraal, onopvallend, conform de norm, zo zien we onze vrouwen graag. Dat ondervindt vandaag ook Maggie De Block (Open VLD), nieuwkomer in de federale regering.

De overdreven en ronduit onbeschofte commentaar op het uiterlijk van de nieuwe staatssecretaris lokte gelukkig ook heel wat reacties uit:

Terecht merken deze auteurs op dat het nu wel eens genoeg is. Wie zich op het publieke forum beweegt, man of vrouw, moet tegen een stootje kunnen. Maar hoever mogen (vaak anonieme) commentaren op internetfora gaan in onbeschoftheid? En alhoewel ook mannen heel wat commentaar krijgen van azijnpissers allerhande, valt dat toch nog niet te vergelijken met de schaamteloosheid waarmee vrouwen aangepakt worden. Er lijkt geen rem meer te staan op persoonlijke beledigingen, terwijl inhoudelijke argumenten steeds verder te zoeken zijn. Als publiek figuur moet je dit soort commentaar onmiddellijk naast je neer leggen, maar je moet al erg stevig in je schoenen staan om volledig ongeschonden zo'n golf van beledigingen te ondergaan.

Rascistische opmerkingen worden terecht snel verwijderd op internetfora en zijn ook juridisch vervolgbaar. Bij seksistische opmerkingen ligt de tolerantiegrens heel wat hoger.Hoe ver mag het online seksisme gaan? Begin november hadden een aantal vrouwelijke Britse opiniemakers er alvast genoeg van. Ze besloten het online seksisme publiek aan te klagen:

"You always remember the first time someone calls you ugly on the internet.¨[...] The sheer volume of sexist abuse thrown at female bloggers is the internet's festering sore: if you talk to any woman who writes online, the chances are she will instantly be able to reel off a greatest hits of insults. But it's very rarely spoken about, for both sound and unsound reasons. No one likes to look like a whiner -- particularly a woman writing in male-dominated fields such as politics, economics or computer games. Others are reluctant to give trolls the "satisfaction" of knowing they're emotionally affected by the abuse or are afraid of incurring more by speaking out."

Het artikel kreeg al snel enorm veel bijval van andere vrouwen en niet de minste. Zo getuigde feministe en auteur Natasha Walter, nochtans echt niet op haar mondje gevallen en voorzien van een gezonde dosis zelfvertrouwen:

"It's one of the reasons why I'm less happy to do as much journalism as I used to, because I do feel really uncomfortable with the tone of the debate," she said. "Under the cloak of anonymity people feel they can express anything, but I didn't realise there were so many people reading my journalism who felt so strongly and personally antagonistic towards feminism and female writers."
