Sarah Waters (°1966)
Sarah Waters is wellicht de belangrijkste schrijfster van lesbische literatuur van het moment. Als auteur van bestsellers als Tipping the velvet (Fluwelen begeerte) en Fingersmith (Vingervlug) bewees ze dat lesboliteratuur ook mainstream kan zijn.
De boeken van Sarah Waters slaan aan bij een breed publiek van zowel lesbiennes als hetero’s. Toch wil Waters vooral lesboliteratuur brengen met spannende verhalen, pikante thema’s en een grote nadruk op lesbische passie. Haar favoriete periode is de Victoriaanse tijd, prominent aanwezig in haar eerste drie boeken Tipping the velvet, Affinity (Affiniteit) en Fingersmith. Haar jongste roman, De nachtwacht, speelt zich af tijdens de tweede Wereldoorlog. Sarah Waters is doctor in de Engelse literatuur en publiceerde ook verschillende artikels over homoseksualiteit.
